Usually by the time I get around to finding something, there inevitably seems to be someone telling me something like “how have you not know about this?” Hmm.
Anyway, This Chrome (chromium/ungoogled chrome) extension is so good it’s worth posting about. It strips the automated suggested/recommended and spammy stuff that many websites have added to their base pages to keep you engaged. It replaces it with quotes that are built-in or you can point to a quote feed. It completely removes pretty much everything and turns your social media sites more into places to search than to read. May or may not be what many people are looking for. But can it do pom?
I find it useful because the goals of these “feeds” or “suggestions” is to keep you engaged and clicking, I don’t like getting sucked into clickbait. The algorithms will also often converge on a certain set of ideas about you and the spamming will begin. This plugin works on all the usual suspects- YT, LI, FB, IG and Twitter. I think all of these sites have been subtly rolling this out for a few years (I don’t really notice), but one thing I have noticed is that a lot of the posts are provocative in an attempt to engage you. For example, Facebook will send me far-right crap just to entice me to get angry. It’s clever, sneaky, creepy, and most of all, wasting my time.
